Core-Collapse Simulations of Rotating Stars

چکیده
We present the results from a series of two-dimensional core-collapse simulations using a rotating progenitor star. We find that the convection in these simulations is less vigorous because a) rotation weakens the core bounce which seeds the neutrino-driven convection and b) the angular momentum profile in the rotating core stabilizes against convection. The limited convection leads to explosions which occur later and are weaker than the explosions produced from the collapse of non-rotating cores. However, because the convection is constrained to the polar regions, when the explosion occurs, it is stronger along the polar axis. This asymmetric explosion can explain the polarization measurements of core-collapse supernovae. These asymmetries also provide a natural mechanism to mix the products of nucleosynthesis out into the helium and hydrogen layers of the star. We also discuss the role the collapse of these rotating stars play on the generation of magnetic fields and neutron star kicks. Given a range of progenitor rotation periods, we predict a range of supernova energies for the same progenitor mass. The critical mass for black hole formation also depends upon the rotation speed of the progenitor. Subject headings: black hole physics stars: rotation supernova: general

General relativistic hydrodynamics with viscosity: contraction, catastrophic collapse, and disk formation in hypermassive neutron stars
Viscosity and magnetic fields drive differentially rotating stars toward uniform rotation, and this process has important consequences in many astrophysical contexts. For example, merging binary neutron stars can form a “hypermassive” remnant, i.e. a differentially rotating star with a mass greater than would be possible for a uniformly rotating star. The removal of the centrifugal support prov...
متن کاملMulti-dimensional Simulations of the Accretion-induced Collapse of White Dwarfs to Neutron Stars
We present 2.5D radiation-hydrodynamics simulations of the accretion-induced collapse (AIC) of white dwarfs, starting from 2D rotational equilibrium configurations, thereby accounting consistently for the effects of rotation prior to and after core collapse. We focus our study on 1.46-M⊙ and 1.92M⊙ progenitors, with a central density of 5×1010 g cm, and initial rotational to gravitational energ...
متن کاملGravitational waves from axisymmetric rotating stellar core collapse to a neutron star in full general relativity
Axisymmetric numerical simulations of rotating stellar core collapse to a neutron star are performed in the framework of full general relativity. The so-called Cartoon method, in which the Einstein field equations are solved in the Cartesian coordinates and the axisymmetric condition is imposed around the y = 0 plane, is adopted. The hydrodynamic equations are solved in the cylindrical coordina...

We derive estimates for the characteristics of gravitational radiation from stellar collapse, using recent models of the core-collapse of Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs (accretion induced collapse), core-collapse supernovae and collapsars, and the collapse of very massive stars (∼> 300M⊙). We study gravitational-wave emission mechanisms using several estimation techniques, including two-dimens...
متن کاملThe Evolution of the First Core in Rotating Molecular Core
The standard star formation scenario is based on spherically symmetric radiative hydrodynamics calculations. In this paper, we focus on the evolution of the rotating non-spherical cloud through the first core and second collapse phases 10 < ρ < 10 3 g cm using axisymmetric numerical calculations. The rotating first core evolves under the influence of mass and angular momentum accretion from the...
